John Deere 523815 – RPT (Rear PTO / Rear Chassis) or BCU (Basic Control Unit): Rear PTO Speed 3 Solenoid Overload Cut-Out

The controller has detected a current draw that exceeds the normal operating limits on the circuit for the Y75 solenoid (which controls PTO Speed 3). To protect the circuit and the control module from electrical damage, the system actively cuts power to the solenoid.

   Inspect the wiring harness running between the PC5 Power Module and the Y75 PTO Speed 3 Solenoid for chafed wires, melted insulation, or areas shorting to the chassis/ground.

   Disconnect the harness at the Y75 solenoid and the PC5 module to inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals that could cause a short circuit.

   Use a multimeter to measure the internal resistance of the Y75 solenoid coil. An internally shorted coil will have abnormally low resistance.

   If available, use a John Deere Service ADVISOR diagnostic tool to monitor the live current draw on the Y75 circuit when PTO Speed 3 is commanded on.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the tractor's battery to ensure safety and prevent further module damage.

   Locate the Solenoid

   Locate the Y75 PTO Speed 3 solenoid on the transmission/PTO hydraulic valve block.

   Remove the Faulty Component

   Disconnect the electrical connector. If the solenoid coil failed the resistance test, remove the retaining nut/fastener and slide the coil off the valve stem (or unthread the entire cartridge valve if it is a one-piece assembly).

   Harness Repair (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section using weather-sealed heat shrink connectors, or replace the affected harness section.

   Install New Solenoid

   Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and tighten the retaining nut to OEM torque specifications.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical connector to the solenoid.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 523815.00 code from the BCU/RPT. Start the tractor, engage PTO Speed 3, and verify that the PTO operates normally without the code returning.
