John Deere 523817.14 – SIC: A39 Stepper Motor E-SCV 4, Incorrect CAN BUS Message from SIC
Issue description
This error is logged when there is a problem transmitting data between the stepper motor of ESCV 4 (Electro-Hydraulic Section Control Valve 4) and the control unit. Intermittently, the stepper motor cannot establish a connection to the control unit via the CAN BUS network.

Check the cause
Inspect Wiring and Connections: Check the wiring harness and connectors between the SIC control unit and the ESCV 4 stepper motor (Component A39) for signs of damage, wear, or loose connections.
Measure Signal Transmission: Verify the CAN High and CAN Low signal transmission between the control unit and the stepper motor to ensure there are no physical interruptions or shorts in the wiring.
Test the Stepper Motor: Use John Deere Service ADVISOR or a compatible diagnostic tool to test the A39 stepper motor to ensure it is functioning correctly and not internally shorting the CAN network.
Monitor Communication: Use diagnostic equipment to monitor the CAN BUS communication for intermittent issues or errors while wiggling the harness.
Update Software: Ensure that the SIC control unit firmware is up to date to rule out software-related communication glitches.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the electrical and hydraulic systems.
Locate ESCV 4
Locate the rear SCV valve block and identify the stepper motor for valve #4 (A39).
Harness Repair
Disconnect the electrical connector at the stepper motor. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals. Clean or repair the connector and harness as necessary. If a wiring fault is found and repaired, test the machine before proceeding.
Remove the Stepper Motor
If the wiring is intact and the motor is deemed faulty, remove the mounting screws (typically M6x12 flange screws) securing the stepper motor to the SCV valve block. Carefully detach the motor.
Install the New Motor
Install the replacement stepper motor. Always use a new O-ring to prevent hydraulic fluid leaks. Torque the mounting screws to OEM specifications.
Reconnect and Power Up
Reconnect the electrical harness to the new motor, reconnect the battery, and turn the ignition ON.
Calibration
Connect your diagnostic tool, clear the 523817.14 fault code, and perform an initialization/calibration procedure for the new ESCV 4 stepper motor so the SIC control unit recognizes it and learns its end-stops.
