John Deere 523818.14 – SIC: A38 Stepper Motor ESCV 3, Incorrect CAN BUS Message from SIC
Issue description
A data transmission problem between the control unit and the stepper motor of ESCV 3. Intermittently, the stepper motor cannot establish a connection to the control unit via the CAN BUS, leading to erratic, impaired, or lost control of the associated hydraulic functions.

Check the cause
Inspect the CAN BUS wiring harness and connectors between the SIC control unit and the ESCV 3 stepper motor (Component A38) for chafing, damage, wear, corrosion, or loose pins
Use a John Deere Service ADVISOR diagnostic tool to monitor the CAN BUS network for intermittent drops, voltage irregularities, or message errors
Verify that the SIC control unit is processing CAN BUS messages properly and sending the correct signals
Ensure that the control unit firmware and software are fully up to date to rule out a software-logic glitch causing the communication drop
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery to protect the CAN BUS network.
Harness Repair
If the diagnostic checks reveal damaged wiring or a loose connector at the ESCV 3 stepper motor (A38) or the SIC module, repair the wiring harness or replace the damaged connector pins.
Software Flash
If wiring is intact, connect the Service ADVISOR tool and flash the SIC control unit with the latest software payload.
Component Replacement
While the code states the stepper motor is rarely the root cause of the message fault, if the internal CAN transceiver of the stepper motor has failed and is corrupting the bus, the E-SCV Stepper Motor will need to be replaced.
Calibration
If the stepper motor is replaced, use the diagnostic tool to perform an ESCV operational check and calibration.
Clear Codes
Clear the SIC 523818.14 code and test the hydraulic functions to ensure erratic behavior has been resolved.
