John Deere 523824.16 – XSC: Steering Wheel Position Sensor, Frequency at Channel 2 Too High

The control unit registers a frequency exceeding 300 Hz at channel 2 of the steering wheel position sensor (Steering Input Device or SID). This indicates a potential malfunction in the sensor itself or a signal processing/wiring issue, which disrupts normal operation and typically causes the AutoTrac™ automatic steering system to disengage or lock out.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the Steering Control Unit for damage, corrosion, or an incompatible harness connection.

   Perform a connector swap test: Interchange the connectors for sensor 1 and sensor 2 at the Steering Input Device (SID) under the steering cowl.

   Turn the system back on and observe the codes. If the same DTC (Channel 2) returns, suspect a wiring harness issue between the SID and the XSC/SSU module. If the DTC shifts to the other position sensor channel, the sensor itself is faulty and must be replaced.

   Power down machine

   Power down the machine and remove the key from the ignition.

   Remove steering cowl

   Remove the plastic covers/cowl surrounding the steering wheel shaft to access the steering column components.

   Locate SID

   Locate the Steering Input Device (SID) on the steering shaft, which houses the steering wheel position sensors.

   Disconnect harness

   Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the faulty Channel 2 steering wheel position sensor.

   Remove faulty sensor

   Unbolt and remove the faulty sensor from the steering column assembly.

   Install new sensor

   Install the new OEM steering wheel position sensor and secure it in place.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the wiring harness securely to the new sensor.

   Reinstall covers

   Reinstall the steering column covers/cowl.

   Test system

   Power on the machine, clear the inactive diagnostic trouble codes from the display, and test the AutoTrac™ system to ensure it engages without kicking out.
