John Deere 523826.03 – RGC or BCU: Wheel Angle Sensor B67 (WAS), Channel 1 Voltage Too High / Nonexistent Function Activated

Depending on the machine family, this fault code has two meanings. On Forage Harvesters (RGC), it indicates the voltage signal from Channel 1 of the steering angle position sensor on the front axle is exceeding the maximum expected threshold. On Tractors (BCU), it indicates the system is attempting to activate a function that does not exist in the machine's current software configuration.

   For Wheel Angle Sensor (RGC): Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Wheel Angle Sensor (B67) on the front steering axle for chafing, pinched wires, or damage.

   For Wheel Angle Sensor (RGC): Disconnect the sensor and check for water intrusion, bent pins, or corrosion.

   For Wheel Angle Sensor (RGC): Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor is receiving the correct 5V reference voltage and has a solid ground.

   For Wheel Angle Sensor (RGC): Back-probe the Channel 1 signal wire. Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock; the voltage should sweep smoothly (typically between 0.5V and 4.5V).

   For BCU Configuration Error (BCU): Verify that the operator inputs are correct and no unintended commands are being issued.

   For BCU Configuration Error (BCU): Ensure the software settings are up-to-date and not incorrectly attempting to activate non-existent optional equipment.

   Preparation

   Park the machine on a level surface, center the steering, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

   Locate the Wheel Angle Sensor (B67) on the front axle steering cylinder/linkage. Disconnect the electrical harness connector.

   Remove the mounting bolts/hardware securing the sensor and linkage arm. Note the exact orientation of the sensor arm before removal.

   Installation

   Install the new OEM Wheel Angle Sensor in the exact same orientation. Torque the mounting hardware to OEM specifications.

   Reconnection

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Reconnect the battery.

   Calibration

   Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR, navigate to the RGC/Steering module, and run the Wheel Angle Sensor Calibration routine. Turn the wheels fully left, fully right, and center as prompted by the software.

   Clear Codes

   Clear the 523826.03 fault code and test drive the machine to verify AutoTrac/steering functions operate normally.
