John Deere 523826 – SSU (Steering System Unit) / XSC: Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS) Primary Signal High

Triggered when the voltage at the signal line of channel 1 of the wheel angle sensor exceeds 4.5 volts for longer than 320 milliseconds, indicating an overvoltage condition or a short-to-power in the primary channel of the steering angle sensor.

   Restart the engine to see if the active DTC reappears to verify if it can be corrected by resetting communication messages.

   Check the power supply to channel 1 of the wheel angle sensor, ensuring proper voltage regulation and that supply voltage does not exceed 4.5 volts.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the SSU/XSC and the wheel angle sensor for damage, loose connections, or corrosion, and perform a load test on the circuits (max 0.2V drop per connection section).

   Jack up the front of the tractor and check for play in the ball joints or steering mechanics.

   Remove the sensor and inspect the internal stem and collar that connect to the sensor for physical damage or wear.

   Clear the Code

   Attempt to clear the code via the CommandCenter display. If it returns immediately, proceed to physical repairs.

   Repair the Harness

   If the diagnostic load test reveals excessive voltage drop or if corrosion is found (especially at interconnects or splices in the harness), repair or replace the affected wiring harness sections.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the wiring is intact, power supply is regulated, and the voltage at the sensor signal line is still outputting over 4.5V (indicating an internal short), replace the Wheel Angle Sensor.

   Recalibrate the Steering System

   After replacing the sensor or repairing any steering mechanics, you must perform a steering system / AutoTrac calibration so the SSU/XSC can learn the new sensor's center and limits.

   Update Software

   Ensure the SSU/XSC firmware is up-to-date, applying any available updates to improve system compatibility.
