John Deere 523832.04 – Hitch Control Unit (HCU): Rear Hitch Rate-of-Drop Sensor Circuit Voltage Low

Issue description

The voltage signal returning from the rear hitch rate-of-drop potentiometer has dropped below the acceptable threshold. This is typically caused by a short to ground, an open circuit in the 5V reference wire, an open signal wire, or a failed potentiometer.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness between the HCU/HCC and the rate-of-drop dial on the right-hand console/armrest for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or loose connector pins.

  2. Disconnect the sensor, turn the key to the ON position, and verify that the sensor connector is receiving a 5V reference signal and has a solid ground.

  3. Check the signal wire from the sensor connector back to the HCU for continuity and ensure it is not shorted to ground.

  4. Test the potentiometer itself by measuring its resistance sweep with a multimeter. The resistance should change smoothly without any dead spots as you turn the dial.
