John Deere 523832.13 – HCC / HCU: Rear Hitch Drop Speed Dial Voltage Out Of Range
Issue description
The control unit is receiving a voltage signal from the rate-of-drop potentiometer (the dial that controls how fast the rear hitch lowers) that falls outside of the expected calibrated parameters. This is typically caused by a failed potentiometer, a short circuit in the wiring harness, or a loss of calibration.

Check the cause
Low-End Voltage Check: Turn the rate-of-drop dial fully counterclockwise. The voltage should read between 0.25V and 1.5V.
High-End Voltage Check: Turn the dial fully clockwise. The voltage should read between 3.5V and 4.75V.
Range Verification: Ensure the full clockwise voltage is at least 2 volts higher than the full counterclockwise voltage.
Sweep Test: Slowly turn the dial through its entire range while monitoring the voltage. There should be no sudden drops, spikes, or erratic changes (dead spots).
Harness Check: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the hitch control panel for corrosion, pinched wires, or short circuits (which can cause the voltage to spike over 4.75V).
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical damage during component replacement.
Access the Module
Remove the trim panels on the right-hand operator console to access the underside of the rear hitch control dials.
Remove the Component
Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the hitch control module/potentiometer assembly. Remove the retaining screws or clips holding the assembly in place.
Install the New Part
Install the new potentiometer or the complete hitch control module assembly (depending on how the part is serviced for your specific model).
Reassemble
Reconnect the wiring harness and reinstall the console trim panels. Reconnect the battery.
Calibrate the HCU/HCC
Because the code specifically flags a calibration fault (.13), you must perform an HCU/HCC calibration procedure using a John Deere diagnostic tool (Service ADVISOR) or the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu so the control unit can learn the minimum and maximum voltage limits of the new potentiometer.
