John Deere 523833.03 – HCU: Rear Hitch Maximum Height Dial Voltage Issue
Issue description
The voltage signal from the rear hitch maximum height dial (or height-limit sensor) is above the normal operating range or shorted to a high source, which disables or impairs the operator's ability to set the maximum raise height of the rear 3-point hitch.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the HCU and the rear hitch maximum height dial/sensor for corrosion, bent pins, moisture intrusion, or chafed wires.
Verify that the sensor ground circuit is intact. An open ground wire will cause the sensor's signal voltage to float high.
Measure the sensor supply voltage to ensure it is within specification (typically 5V).
Unplug the height dial/sensor. If the fault code changes from .03 (Voltage High) to .04 (Voltage Low), the sensor/dial itself has failed internally. If the code remains .03, there is a short to power in the wiring harness.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Harness Repair
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to power or a broken ground in the harness, repair the damaged wire or replace the affected harness section.
Sensor Replacement
If the sensor/dial is faulty, locate the maximum height dial/potentiometer. Remove the retaining hardware and disconnect the electrical pigtail.
Installation
Install the new potentiometer/sensor and secure the mounting hardware. Reconnect the electrical connector.
Reassembly
Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Calibration
You must perform a rear hitch calibration procedure after replacing hitch position sensors or dials. Without calibration, the HCU will not recognize the new sensor's voltage sweep, and the hitch will not operate correctly.
