Issue description

The voltage signal returning from the raise-limit potentiometer (the dial used to set the maximum height of the rear hitch) is below the expected minimum threshold. Normal operating voltage for this circuit is typically between 0.50V and 4.50V. A low voltage reading usually points to a short to ground in the wiring harness, a disconnected sensor, or an internally failed potentiometer.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the rear hitch raise-limit control dial in the cab for disconnected plugs, backed-out pins, or chafed wires that could be shorting to the chassis ground.

  2. Using a multimeter, check the sensor supply voltage at the potentiometer connector to ensure the HCU is supplying a steady reference voltage (typically 5V).

  3. Monitor the signal voltage while turning the dial. It should smoothly sweep from approximately 0.50V (Limited Raise) to 4.50V (Maximum Raise). If the voltage stays near 0V, the potentiometer is likely shorted internally or the signal wire is shorted to ground.

  4. Check for related codes. If codes like 523834.04 (Control Lever Sensor Voltage Low) are also present, the HCU might be failing to provide the 5V reference supply to the entire hitch control console.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Lower the rear hitch completely to the ground and relieve all hydraulic pressure before beginning work. Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery if repairing wiring.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground or a broken wire in the harness between the HCU and the dial, splice and repair the damaged section using OEM-approved weather-sealed connectors.

  3. Replace the Potentiometer/Dial

    If the wiring is intact but the voltage remains low, the raise-limit control dial has failed. Remove the console trim to access the back of the hitch control panel, unplug the faulty dial, and install the replacement part.

  4. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use the diagnostic monitor or a scan tool to clear the stored 523833.04 code.

  5. Perform Hitch Calibration

    After replacing the dial or repairing the circuit, you must perform a Rear Hitch Calibration (often referenced as procedure 245-HCU-001 in JD manuals). This allows the HCU to learn the minimum and maximum voltage values of the new potentiometer. Failure to calibrate may result in code 523833.13 (HCU Calibration Fault).
