John Deere 523833.13 – HCU (Hitch Control Unit): Rear Hitch Drop Speed Dial Voltage Out Of Range / HCU Calibration Fault / Rear Hitch Raise-Limit Control
Issue description
The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the potentiometer (dial) that controls the rear hitch drop speed or raise limit that falls outside the expected operating parameters, or the module encountered an error while trying to calibrate the dial's sweep range.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the hitch control dials on the right-hand console for pinched wires, corrosion, or backed-out pins
Perform a voltage sweep test using a multimeter to verify the potentiometer receives a steady 5V reference and good ground. Back-probe the signal wire while slowly turning the dial; voltage should change smoothly without dropping out or spiking
Attempt to run the HCU Hitch Calibration procedure via the tractor's diagnostic display or John Deere Service ADVISOR (the .13 suffix specifically denotes a calibration error and recalibration may clear the code)
Repair steps
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.
Remove the trim panels on the right-hand operator console to access the underside of the electro-hydraulic hitch controls.

Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the hitch control module assembly.
Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the hitch control module assembly.
Remove the mounting screws securing the potentiometer assembly to the console.
Remove the mounting screws securing the potentiometer assembly to the console. (Note: On many 5M series tractors, the drop speed, raise limit, and draft control potentiometers are housed together in a single module block).
Install the new potentiometer/module assembly and secure it with the mounting screws.

Perform the HCU Hitch Calibration procedure using John Deere Service ADVISOR or the onboard diagnostic interface.
Crucial Step: You must perform the HCU Hitch Calibration procedure using John Deere Service ADVISOR or the onboard diagnostic interface so the HCU can learn the minimum and maximum voltage values of the new dial.
