John Deere 523834.03 – HCC / HCU / BCU / ACU: Depth-Setting Potentiometer, Voltage Too High

This usually indicates a short to power, an open circuit in the sensor harness, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.    Inspect the rear hitch control lever sensor (Component B27 or SE13) and its circuit for signs of physical damage, electrical wear, or degradation.

   Use a multimeter to verify the actual voltage levels at the sensor. Confirm if the voltage is spiking above the 4.5V - 4.75V threshold.

   Perform a circuit/harness test on the Depth-Setting Potentiometer. Check the positive lead and signal lead for a short circuit to a power source or an open ground.

   Inspect all related wiring and electrical connections at the control console and the module (BCU/HCC/HCU) for corrosion or looseness that could impact voltage delivery.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

   Access the Sensor

   Remove the control console cover that houses the position feedback unit (where the hitch dials are located).

   Remove Hardware

   Pull off the control knobs from the dials. Take off the retaining hex nuts.

   Extract the Sensor

   Using a screwdriver, carefully press out the depth-setting potentiometer. Unscrew the hex socket screw holding the assembly.

   Unplug the position feedback unit's wiring harness.

   Replace and Reassemble

   Connect the new potentiometer, secure the hex screws and nuts, replace the console cover, and reattach the knobs.

   Recalibrate the Hitch

   After replacing the potentiometer, you must recalibrate the linkage/hitch control system via the tractor's monitor or Service ADVISOR. During the preliminary settings of the calibration procedure, the 'Depth Control' dial must be set to 0 (hitch fully raised) before proceeding, otherwise the calibration will fail and throw a secondary code.
