John Deere 523834.03 – HCC / HCU / BCU: The Signal Voltage From The Rear Hitch Height Control Slide is High
Issue description
This code is triggered when the control unit detects that the voltage at the signal input of the depth-setting potentiometer (the slide/lever used to control the rear hitch height) has exceeded the normal operating threshold (typically higher than 4.75 V). This abnormal voltage usually indicates a malfunction within the circuit, such as a short to power, an open ground wire, or an internally shorted/failed potentiometer.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the rear hitch control lever sensor (depth-setting potentiometer) and its wiring harness for signs of electrical wear, physical damage, or degradation.
Use a multimeter to verify the actual voltage levels at the sensor to confirm if the voltage is spiking above 4.75V.
Check the wiring between the potentiometer and the control module (HCC/HCU/BCU) for a short to a power source or a broken/corroded ground connection.
Repair steps
Access the Sensor
Remove the control console cover that houses the position feedback unit (the rear hitch control levers).
Disconnect
Pull off the control knobs and disconnect the wiring harness from the depth-setting potentiometer.
Remove the Potentiometer
Take off the retaining hex nuts. Using a screwdriver, carefully press out the faulty depth-setting potentiometer from the console.
Install the New Part
Seat the new potentiometer, secure the hex nuts, and reconnect the wiring harness.
Reassemble
Reinstall the control console cover and knobs.
Recalibrate
After replacing the potentiometer, you must recalibrate the rear hitch control system using the tractor's CommandCenter display or John Deere Service ADVISOR. If calibration is not performed, the hitch will not function correctly and may throw calibration fault codes (e.g., 523834.13 - Not Calibrated).
