John Deere 523834.04 – BCU / HCU / HCC: Depth-Setting Potentiometer, Voltage Too Low

The control unit has detected that the signal voltage from the rear hitch depth-setting potentiometer has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold, indicating an open circuit, a short to ground in the sensor wiring, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

   Inspect the rear hitch control lever/dial on the side console for physical damage, liquid intrusion, or heavy debris.

   Trace the wiring harness from the depth-setting potentiometer (B27) to the control unit (BCU/HCU/HCC). Look for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or a short to ground.

   Disconnect the sensor plug and check for bent pins, corrosion, or pushed-out terminals.

   Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor is receiving the correct 5V reference voltage and a good ground from the control unit. If the 5V reference is missing, the issue is in the harness or the control unit. If the 5V and ground are present but the signal wire output is dead (below 0.25V) while moving the dial, the potentiometer is internally faulty.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Sensor

   Remove the trim panels/cover on the right-hand control console to expose the position feedback unit.

   Remove the Potentiometer

   Pull off the external control knobs. Remove the hex nuts or socket screws securing the potentiometer assembly. Carefully pry out the depth-setting potentiometer (B27) using a small flathead screwdriver at the retaining tabs.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the wiring harness connector from the sensor.

   Install New Part

   Connect the harness to the new potentiometer and snap/screw it back into the console bracket. Reinstall the console covers and knobs.

   Calibration

   Perform a Rear Hitch Calibration procedure through the CommandCenter display or via John Deere Service ADVISOR. This is critical so the control unit knows the new sensor's minimum and maximum voltage sweeps.
