523834.13

John Deere 523834.13 – HCC / HCU: Hitch Calibration Fault / Rear Hitch Control Lever Sensor

Issue description

The signal voltage from the rear hitch height control slide (or depth-setting potentiometer) is out of its valid operating range, or the system has lost its calibration data. The hitch system is typically disabled automatically to prevent unsafe or erratic hitch operations.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the rear hitch control lever sensor and its circuit for signs of electrical wear, physical damage, or degradation

  2. Check all related wiring harnesses and electrical connectors for corrosion, looseness, or pinched wires that could cause voltage drops or spikes

  3. Use a multimeter to verify the actual voltage levels at the depth-setting potentiometer/sensor (normal operating voltage range is between 0.5V and 4.5V)

  4. Ensure the tractor's power sources are functioning properly, as weak battery performance can cause low voltage readings across sensor circuits

Repair steps

  1. Remove console cover

Remove the control console cover that houses the position feedback unit.

  2. Remove knobs and nuts

Pull off the control knobs and remove the retaining hex nuts.

  3. Remove potentiometer

Using a screwdriver, carefully press out the depth-setting potentiometer.

  4. Disconnect harness

Unscrew the hex socket screw and disconnect the position feedback unit's harness.

  5. Install new potentiometer

Install the new potentiometer, reconnect the harness, and reassemble the console.

  6. Set Depth Control

Set the Depth Control dial to 0 (which commands the hitch to be fully raised).

  7. Initiate calibration

Depending on the tractor model, calibration is initiated either through the CommandCenter display or via John Deere Service ADVISOR.

  8. Perform calibration motion

Move the hitch through its full range of motion (fully raised to fully lowered). This teaches the controller the minimum and maximum voltage limits of the new potentiometer.

  9. Clear codes

Clear the diagnostic codes after a successful calibration.
