John Deere 523834.19 – HCC: Rear Hitch Control Depth / Rate Of Drop / Lift Limit Dial Unit - Received Network Data In Error
Issue description
The control module is failing to receive valid data messages from the rear hitch control dial unit over the LIN BUS network. This is a communication failure, meaning the module cannot read the operator's commanded hitch depth or drop rate.

Check the cause
Check for companion codes: If multiple LIN BUS codes are present, the issue is likely a main harness failure, a severed LIN BUS wire, or a shared ground/power circuit issue rather than the dial unit itself.
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the right-hand control console (or CommandARM) to the HCC module for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or loose connections.
Disconnect the connector at the depth-setting potentiometer and the HCC module. Inspect for bent, corroded, or pushed-back pins.
Verify power and ground: Ensure the dial unit is receiving its proper reference voltage (usually 5V) and has a solid ground. A missing ground or voltage supply will cause the LIN BUS communication to drop.
Test the LIN BUS signal: Use a multimeter or oscilloscope to check the LIN BUS wire for activity. It should fluctuate between 1V and battery voltage when communicating.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Access the Control Unit
Remove the trim panels on the right-hand control console or CommandARM to access the underside of the hitch control dials.
Disconnect the Harness
Unplug the electrical connector from the position feedback unit / depth-setting potentiometer.
Remove the Dial Unit
Pull off the control knobs from the top of the console. Remove the hex nuts or retaining screws holding the potentiometer assembly in place. Carefully press or pull the unit out of the console.
Install the New Unit
Insert the new depth-setting potentiometer into the console. Secure it with the retaining nuts/screws and reattach the control knobs.
Reconnect and Reassemble
Plug the electrical connector back into the new unit. Reinstall all trim panels.
Calibrate the Hitch
Reconnect the battery. Turn key on and use the John Deere Service ADVISOR tool (or the tractor's onboard CommandCenter display, if equipped) to perform the Hitch Calibration procedure. The HCC must learn the new potentiometer's minimum and maximum voltage values.
Clear Codes
Clear the 523834.19 fault code and test the rear hitch operation.
Parts you might need
(1)Depth-Setting Potentiometer / Rear Hitch Control Lever Sensor / Position Feedback Unit
Varies heavily by exact tractor model and console configuration. Often sold as a complete assembly with the rate-of-drop and lift limit dials. Look up the specific part number in the John Deere parts catalog using the tractor's PIN/serial number. Ensure you order the correct version for your transmission and console type.
