523834.31

John Deere 523834.31 – HCC (Hitch Control Controller / Rear Chassis): Depth-setting potentiometer, Malfunction

Issue description

The Rear Hitch Control Depth / Rate of Drop / Lift Limit Dial Unit has a problem communicating on the LIN BUS network. When the controller loses communication with this dial unit, the tractor cannot accurately determine the operator's physical input for the rear hitch depth setting.

Check the cause

  1. Harness and Connector Inspection: Check the wiring harness of the position feedback unit for chafing, pinched wires, or loose connections.

  2. LIN Bus Network Test: Verify the integrity of the LIN Bus circuit connecting the HCC to the right-hand control console.

  3. Check for Accompanying Voltage Codes: Look for related codes that might indicate a hard wiring failure rather than a module communication failure, such as 523834.03 (Voltage Too High) or 523834.04 (Voltage Too Low).

Repair steps

  1. Access the Console

Remove the control console cover that houses the position feedback unit.

  2. Remove Hardware

Pull off the control knobs (A) from the dials.

  3. Unbolt the Unit

Take off the retaining hex nuts (B).

  4. Extract the Sensor

Using a screwdriver, carefully press out the depth-setting potentiometer (C).

  5. Disconnect

Unscrew the hex socket screw (D) and disconnect the position feedback unit's harness.

  6. Install New Part

Connect the harness to the new potentiometer, seat it into the console, and reinstall the nuts, knobs, and console cover.

  7. Calibrate the Hitch

After replacing the depth setting potentiometer, the rear linkage must be calibrated so the HCC can define the high and low stops. Set the Depth Control dial to '0' (fully raised) before initiating the calibration sequence via the CommandArm or Service Advisor, followed by fully lowering the hitch to register the travel limits.
