Check the cause

  2. Using a multimeter, check the signal voltage at the sensor. If it is reading above 4.5 volts, check the sensor's ground circuit for an open condition.

  3. Disconnect the sensor and the HCU/HCC. Check for a short to power on the signal wire.

  4. If the wiring harness (reference voltage, signal, and ground) tests good, the internal potentiometer of the load/depth sensor or draft dial has likely failed.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Component

    Depending on the exact model, locate either the draft control dial/potentiometer (usually in the right-hand console) or the rear hitch load/depth sensor (typically mounted near the rockshaft/rear hitch assembly).

  3. Disconnect and Replace

    Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty sensor/potentiometer. Remove the mounting hardware and remove the component.

  4. Install New Part

    Install the replacement sensor or potentiometer and secure the mounting hardware. Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connector clicks into place and is free of debris.

  5. Reassemble and Power Up

    Reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibration

    Turn the key on and clear the stored fault codes. Note: Replacing hitch control sensors or the HCU usually requires performing a Rear Hitch Calibration procedure via the tractor's diagnostic monitor or John Deere Service ADVISOR software to relearn the sensor's minimum and maximum voltage sweeps.
