John Deere 523842.13 – HCC / HCU: Rear Hitch Load/Depth Control Fault/Out of Calibration
Issue description
This code is logged when the control module detects that the signal voltage from the Rear Hitch Load/Depth Control Potentiometer (Sensitivity Potentiometer) is outside of its expected operational range, or the sensor has lost its calibration limits, which disables or limits the electronic rear hitch control functions.

Check the cause
Perform a voltage sweep test on the Rear Hitch Load/Depth Control Potentiometer (0.5V to 1.5V full CCW, 3.5V to 4.5V full CW)
Check for shorts to power (voltage above 4.75V) or open circuits/shorts to ground (voltage below 0.25V)
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the potentiometer and the HCU/HCC for corrosion, bent pins, or chafed wires
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and relieve any hydraulic pressure.
Inspect the Connector
Locate the Rear Hitch Load/Depth Control Potentiometer on the right-hand control console. Disconnect the sensor plug and inspect the terminals. Clean any debris or corrosion with electrical contact cleaner.
Test the Harness
Perform a continuity test on the signal, ground, and 5V reference wires between the sensor connector and the HCU/HCC module. Repair any damaged wiring.
Replace the Sensor
If the wiring is intact but the sensor fails the voltage sweep test (dead spots or out-of-range voltage), remove the retaining hardware and replace the potentiometer.
Perform Hitch Calibration
Whether you repaired a wire or replaced the sensor, you must perform the Rear Hitch Calibration procedure via the tractor's CommandCenter or diagnostic tool so the HCU/HCC can relearn the new minimum and maximum voltage limits.
Clear Codes
Clear the 523842.13 DTC and verify that the rear hitch operates smoothly through its full range of motion.
