John Deere 523843.02 – HCU, HCC, or BCU: Rear Raise/Lower Switch Circuit Fault

The control unit has detected an invalid electrical state from the rear hitch controls. This triggers if the remote fender switch and the cab's Quick Raise/Lower switch are pressed at the exact same time, or if there is a short/open circuit in the switch wiring causing the signal voltage to fall outside the expected parameters.

   Verify that the operator is not accidentally pressing the external remote hitch switch (on the fender) and the cab's Quick Raise/Lower switch simultaneously

   Turn off the tractor and restart the engine to attempt a system reset

   Inspect the cab's Quick Raise/Lower rocker switch (S24) and the external fender switches for stuck buttons, packed dirt, or physical damage

   Using a multimeter, check the voltage of the S24 switch (Center: 1.60V to 3.60V, RAISE: 3.60V to 4.50V, LOWER: 0.70V to 1.60V). Readings above 10.5V or at 0V indicate a short to power or ground

   Cycle Power

   Shut off the engine and restart it. If the code was caused by a momentary simultaneous button press, this will clear the code and restore hitch function.

   Clean and Free Switches

   If the code persists, physically clean the S24 Quick Raise/Lower switch in the cab and the external fender switches. Ensure they return to their neutral positions freely.

   Test the Switch

   Disconnect the S24 switch and test it with a multimeter. If the switch is internally shorted or reading out of the voltage ranges listed in the diagnostic checks, it has failed and must be replaced.

   Inspect the Wiring Harness

   If the switch tests fine, trace the wiring harness from the S24 switch and the external remote switches back to the respective control module (HCU, BCU, or HCC). Look for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or corrosion at the connectors.

   Repair or Replace

   Replace the faulty switch or repair the damaged wiring harness as necessary.

   Verify Repair

   Reconnect all components, turn the key switch on, and verify that fault code 523843.02 has cleared and the hitch operates normally in both directions.
