John Deere 523843.15 – HCU: Rear Hitch Control Switch Position Fault
Issue description
The control module is receiving a signal voltage from the cab's rear hitch quick raise/lower switch that falls outside of the expected operating parameters (e.g., shorted to ground, shorted to power, or an internal potentiometer/contact failure), which typically disables the quick raise/lower function.

Check the cause
Cycle power by turning the ignition key switch off, waiting a few moments, and turning it back on to clear potential temporary glitches.
Physically inspect the quick raise/lower rocker switch in the cab to ensure it is not physically stuck, jammed by debris, or damaged.
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors connecting to the switch for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or corroded connector pins that could cause a short to ground or high voltage.
Ensure that the external fender-mounted remote hitch switches are not being pressed or shorted at the same time as the cab switch, as simultaneous inputs can trigger switch faults.
Repair steps
Prepare machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower the rear hitch completely (if possible), turn off the engine, and remove the key.
Locate switch
Locate the Quick Raise/Lower switch on the right-hand operator console.
Access switch
Carefully pry or unclip the switch bezel/panel from the console to access the rear of the switch.
Disconnect harness
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the faulty switch.
Remove switch
Depress the retaining tabs on the sides of the switch body and push it out of the mounting panel.
Install new switch
Snap the new OEM switch into the panel.
Reconnect harness
Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connector clicks securely into place.
Reinstall panel
Reinstall the console panel.
Test operation
Turn the ignition on and test the raise/lower function to confirm the code has cleared and the hitch operates smoothly.
