John Deere 523843.19 – HCU / HCC: Rear Hitch Control Switch Communication Fault

The control module is either losing communication with or receiving an out-of-range/invalid signal from the external rear hitch quick raise/lower switch (typically mounted on the rear fender).

   Observe the QRL (Quick Raise/Lower) diagnostic indicator on the instrument panel. A fast-blinking indicator specifically points to a rear hitch control switch problem.

   Inspect the rear fender where the switch is mounted. Check the rubber boot (if equipped) for tears that may have allowed water intrusion.

   Trace the wiring harness from the fender switch back to the HCU/HCC. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the chassis, or heavy corrosion inside the switch connector.

   Using a multimeter, verify that the switch is receiving the correct reference voltage from the module and that the signal circuit is not shorted to ground or open.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

   Access the Switch

   Locate the faulty rear hitch control switch on the rear fender (left or right side, depending on which switch triggered the fault).

   Disconnect Harness

   Reach behind the fender panel and carefully unplug the electrical connector from the bottom of the switch.

   Remove the Switch

   Depress the retaining tabs or remove the mounting screws securing the switch/bezel to the fender housing and push the switch out.

   Install New Part

   Insert the replacement switch into the fender cutout until it clicks securely into place. If replacing the protective rubber boot, install it over the switch now.

   Reconnect

   Plug the wiring harness back into the new switch. Ensure the weather-pack seal on the connector is intact.

   Test

   Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and test the external fender switch to ensure the 3-point hitch raises and lowers correctly. Verify that the 523843.19 code has moved to an inactive state or cleared entirely.
