523870

John Deere 523870 – SCO: Stepper Motor for E-SCV XII, Temperature Too High

Issue description

The temperature of the stepper motor for Electronic Selective Control Valve 12 (E-SCV XII) has exceeded 100 °C (212 °F). The stepper motor will not resume operation until its internal temperature drops below this threshold. The control software will disable the selective control valve, resulting in no function for E-SCV XII.

Check the cause

  1. Allow the machine to cool down until the stepper motor temperature drops below 100°C (212°F) and test operation

  2. Inspect the tractor's hydraulic oil cooling system for issues causing the hydraulic fluid to overheat

  3. Monitor the temperature of the stepper motor via the diagnostic monitor to ensure it stays within the recommended range

  4. Check the SCV spool valve for mechanical binding, which can cause the stepper motor to overwork and generate excessive heat

Repair steps

  1. Cool Down & Clear

Allow the tractor to sit until the E-SCV XII stepper motor cools below 100°C (212°F). Clear the fault codes.

  2. Address Hydraulic Overheating

If the hydraulic system is overheating, repair or replace any faulty hydraulic cooling components (e.g., restricted coolers, low fluid levels).

  3. Replace the Stepper Motor

If the hydraulic oil temperature is normal but the E-SCV XII stepper motor continues to overheat (often due to an internal electrical short or internal friction), the stepper motor must be replaced.

  4. Recalibrate

After installing a new stepper motor, use John Deere Service ADVISOR to calibrate the new E-SCV stepper motor to the SCO controller.
