John Deere 523871.01 – SCO: Stepper Motor for E-SCV XIII, Temperature Too Low
Issue description
This code indicates that the internal temperature of the stepper motor for the E-SCV XIII (Electronic Selective Control Valve 13) has registered below -45°C (-49°F). At this extreme low temperature reading, the control software determines the motor cannot function correctly, resulting in limited or no function of that specific selective control valve. If the tractor is not actually operating in -45°C weather, this indicates a failed internal temperature sensor within the stepper motor or a wiring fault causing a false reading.

Check the cause
Verify the actual ambient temperature to ensure the machine is not operating in extreme arctic conditions (allow tractor and hydraulic oil to warm up if so)
Check the supply voltage to the E-SCV XIII stepper motor (requires a minimum of 9 to 11 volts)
Inspect the wiring harness and the specific connector plugging into the E-SCV XIII stepper motor for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins causing an open circuit
Check the CAN Bus wiring for signs of damage preventing SCO module communication
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and relieve all hydraulic pressure from the SCV system.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the rear (or mid-mount, depending on configuration) SCV valve stack. Identify the slice corresponding to E-SCV XIII.
Disconnect Harness
Unplug the electrical connector from the E-SCV XIII stepper motor. Clean the contacts with electronic contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease. Reconnect and test the machine.
Replace Stepper Motor
If the wiring is sound and the code returns (indicating a failed internal thermistor), the stepper motor must be replaced. Remove the retaining screws/bolts holding the stepper motor to the SCV valve body, carefully pull the stepper motor straight back to disengage it from the valve spool, install the new stepper motor ensuring the mechanical linkage aligns correctly with the spool, and torque the mounting hardware to OEM specifications.
Recalibration
After replacing an E-SCV stepper motor, use the tractor's CommandCenter display or John Deere Service ADVISOR to perform an SCV calibration so the SCO module can learn the new motor's end-stops.
