John Deere 523871.18 – SCO / SIC: Stepper Motor for E-SCV XIII, Hydraulic Oil Temperature and Supply Voltage Too Low
Issue description
The system has detected that the supply voltage at the stepper motor for Electronic Selective Control Valve (E-SCV) 13 has dropped too low (typically between 9-11 volts) while the hydraulic oil temperature is also extremely cold (between -25°C and -15°C). Because cold, thick hydraulic oil requires more electrical current to actuate the valve, the low voltage condition prevents the stepper motor from operating safely, resulting in an 'ICV/SCV inoperative' state.

Check the cause
Warm up the machine until the hydraulic oil reaches normal operating temperature
Check system voltage (battery and alternator output must be above 11 volts)
Inspect the front chassis harness and measure voltage directly at the E-SCV XIII stepper motor connector for voltage drops, corroded pins, or loose grounds
Repair steps
Warm up hydraulic oil
Start the tractor and allow it to idle until the hydraulic oil temperature is above freezing and reaches normal operating parameters. Clear the codes.
Verify charging system voltage
If the code remains active after the oil is warm, use a multimeter to verify that the tractor's charging system is delivering a steady 12-14V to the SCO/SIC module.
Clean electrical contacts
Disconnect the electrical connector at the E-SCV XIII stepper motor. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.
Check wiring harness
Check the wiring harness leading from the Front Chassis Module (SCO) to the SCV 13 valve for chafing or breaks. Repair any damaged wires.
Replace stepper motor
If the voltage at the connector is correct, the oil is warm, and the code persists, the E-SCV stepper motor itself has likely failed internally and must be replaced.
Calibrate stepper motor
After replacing the stepper motor, use a John Deere Service ADVISOR tool to calibrate the new SCV stepper motor.
