Issue description

The stepper motor that electronically controls the #1 Selective Control Valve (SCV) has exceeded its maximum safe operating temperature threshold. This condition is typically caused by an internal electrical short in the motor, extreme hydraulic fluid temperatures, or mechanical binding within the valve spool that forces the motor to overwork and overheat.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness (specifically harness W32) and the 4-pin connector (X464) at the E-SCV 1 stepper motor (Component A36) for corrosion, melting, or short circuits.

  2. Verify that the tractor has adequate hydraulic fluid levels and that the hydraulic oil temperature is within normal operating range.

  3. Swap the stepper motor from SCV 1 (A36) with the stepper motor from SCV 2 (A37). If the high-temperature fault follows the motor to the SCV 2 position, the motor is internally faulty. If the fault remains at SCV 1, you likely have a wiring issue or a mechanically binding valve spool.

  4. With the motor removed, manually check the exposed valve spool for smooth operation. If it binds, the valve block itself requires rebuilding or replacement.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve hydraulic pressure

    Lower all implements to the ground, turn off the engine, and relieve all hydraulic pressure by cycling the SCV levers/controls. Warning: Escaping fluid under pressure can penetrate the skin causing serious injury.

  2. Access the SCV Block

    Locate the rear SCV valve stack at the back of the tractor and identify the #1 SCV slice.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the 4-pin electrical connector (X464) from the E-SCV 1 stepper motor.

  4. Remove the Motor

    Remove the retaining hardware securing the stepper motor to the SCV valve housing. Carefully pull the motor straight up and off the valve spool.

  5. Install New Motor

    Ensure the spool is free of debris and moves smoothly. Install the new E-SCV stepper motor onto the valve block and tighten the retaining bolts to OEM specifications.

  6. Reconnect and Calibrate

    Plug in the electrical connector. Turn on the tractor and use the CommandCenter display or John Deere Service ADVISOR tool to perform an SCV calibration (Operational Check) so the SCC module learns the end-stops of the new motor.
