Issue description

This code is generated when the internal temperature sensor of the stepper motor for ESCV 3 (Electro-Hydraulic Selective Control Valve #3) measures a temperature exceeding 100°C (212°F). When this threshold is reached, the system disables the stepper motor to prevent permanent damage. The valve will not become operable again until the temperature drops below 100°C.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the SCV stack at the rear of the tractor for heavy mud, debris, or field material packed around the ESCV 3 stepper motor that is impeding natural cooling airflow.

  2. Use a laser thermometer or diagnostic tool to measure the physical temperature of the ESCV 3 stepper motor. If the motor is physically cool but the code is active, the motor's internal temperature sensor has likely failed.

  3. Check the system voltage at the stepper motor harness. Overvoltage conditions can cause the stepper motor to overheat rapidly.

  4. Check the motor for internal electrical faults (such as a short circuit) that would cause excessive heat generation.

  5. Ensure the SIC control unit firmware is up to date, as software glitches can sometimes cause erroneous temperature readings or overworking of the valve.

Repair steps

  1. Cool Down

    Turn off the tractor and allow the ESCV 3 stepper motor to cool below 100°C (212°F).

  2. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the rear SCV valve stack to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during disassembly.

  3. Relieve Pressure

    Depressurize the hydraulic system completely before servicing the valve.

  4. Disconnect Harness

    Unplug the electrical connector from the ESCV 3 stepper motor (A38) and inspect the pins for corrosion or melting.

  5. Remove Stepper Motor

    Remove the mounting hardware securing the stepper motor to the SCV 3 valve body.

  6. Install New Motor

    If the motor has failed internally or the sensor is faulty, install a replacement stepper motor. It is highly recommended to replace the flange seals/O-rings at this time to prevent hydraulic leaks.

  7. Reassembly

    Secure the new motor to the valve body and reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Calibration

    Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR, clear the SIC 523889.03 fault code, and perform the "E-SCV 3 Stepper Motor Operational Check" and calibration procedure so the SIC module learns the new motor's end-stops.
