523889.04

John Deere 523889.04 – SIC: A38 ESCV 3 Stepper Motor, Temperature Too Low

Issue description

This diagnostic trouble code is generated when the temperature of the stepper motor for ESCV 3 (Electro-Hydraulic Section Control Valve) is measured at less than 45°C (49°F).

Applies to these machines

  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R
  • 6230
  • 6330
  • 6430
  • 7x30 series
  • 6R series

Check the cause

  1. Use John Deere Service ADVISOR to monitor the live temperature reading of the ESCV 3 stepper motor to determine if the reading is genuinely below 45°C or if the sensor is providing a false reading.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the SIC control unit and the ESCV 3 stepper motor for signs of damage, wear, corrosion, or loose connections.

  3. Check CAN BUS communication to ensure there are no intermittent communication errors between the SIC and the stepper motor.

  4. Ensure that the SIC control unit firmware and software are up to date to rule out software-related anomalies.

Repair steps

  1. Warm-Up Cycle

Start the tractor and operate the hydraulic system to bring the hydraulic oil and valve block up to normal operating temperature. If the code clears once the system warms up past 45°C (49°F), the sensor is functioning normally, and the code was simply triggered by cold environmental conditions.

  2. Harness Repair

If the system is warm but the code persists, disconnect the harness at the ESCV 3 stepper motor. Inspect the pins. If wiring damage is found, repair the harness or replace the connector.

  3. Replace the Stepper Motor

If the wiring is intact, the internal temperature sensor of the stepper motor has likely failed. The sensor is integrated into the motor assembly, requiring the replacement of the ESCV 3 stepper motor.

  4. Calibration

After installing a new stepper motor, use Service ADVISOR to clear the stored SIC fault codes and perform an ESCV calibration to ensure the new motor is recognized and operates smoothly.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • ESCV Stepper Motor / ISCV Control Unit Motor

    AL219124

Replaces older part numbers AL205608 and AL170550. Fits the ESCV valve blocks on John Deere 6x30, 7x30, and 6R series tractors. Always verify the exact part number against the tractor's specific serial number.
