John Deere 523893.03 – Rear Chassis Module (SCC): A39 ESCV 4 Stepper Motor, Temperature Too High
Issue description
This code is generated when the temperature measured at the stepper motor of the Electro-Hydraulic Section Control Valve 4 (ESCV 4) exceeds 100°C (212°F). The stepper motor is automatically disabled to prevent permanent damage from overheating.

Check the cause
Inspect the physical area around the ESCV 4 stepper motor (rear hydraulic valve stack) for packed dirt, debris, or obstructions impeding cooling airflow
Measure the actual temperature of the stepper motor using Service ADVISOR or an infrared thermometer to verify if the overheating condition is real or a false sensor reading
Test the stepper motor for internal electrical faults (such as high resistance or internal shorts) that would cause it to generate excessive heat
Ensure the SCC/SIC control unit firmware and software are up to date, as software glitches can sometimes contribute to overworking the stepper motor
Repair steps
Cool Down & Clear
Turn off the tractor and allow the ESCV 4 stepper motor to cool below 100°C (212°F). Thoroughly clean the rear hydraulic valve block.
Retest
Restart the tractor and operate the SCV 4 function. If the code clears and does not return, the issue was likely environmental (debris blocking heat dissipation).
Replace Motor
If the code persists, or if the motor rapidly overheats again during normal use, the stepper motor has an internal fault and must be replaced.
Software Update
After replacing the motor, connect Service ADVISOR to flash the latest software to the Rear Chassis Module (SCC) and calibrate the new ESCV stepper motor.
