John Deere 523893.04 – Rear Chassis Module (SCC): E-SCV 4 Stepper Motor, Temperature Too Low

Issue description

The internal temperature sensor of the E-SCV 4 stepper motor registers a temperature that is below the valid operating threshold, indicating an open circuit, a wiring fault, or a failed internal thermistor inside the stepper motor.

Check the cause

  1. Use John Deere Service ADVISOR or the tractor's CommandCenter display to monitor the live temperature reading of the E-SCV 4 stepper motor. An impossibly low number confirms a sensor/circuit failure.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the E-SCV 4 motor (A39) at the rear valve block. Look for corrosion, backed-out pins, moisture intrusion, or broken wires that would cause an open circuit.

  3. Perform an operational check of the E-SCV 4 Stepper Motor via the CommandCenter diagnostic menu.

  4. To isolate whether the issue is in the tractor's wiring harness or the motor itself, swap the electrical connector of the E-SCV 4 motor with an adjacent, known-good motor (like E-SCV 3). If the fault code changes to the SCV 3 circuit, the wiring/module is at fault. If the fault stays with the SCV 4 motor, the stepper motor itself has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and relieve all hydraulic system pressure by cycling the SCV levers/controls.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Access the rear hydraulic SCV stack on the back of the chassis and identify the #4 valve block.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical harness connector from the E-SCV 4 stepper motor.

  4. Removal

    Remove the retaining hex screws/bolts that secure the stepper motor to the hydraulic valve body. Carefully pull the stepper motor straight back to remove it.

  5. Installation

    Clean the mating surface on the valve body. Install the new E-SCV stepper motor and torque the mounting hardware to OEM specifications.

  6. Reconnection

    Plug the electrical harness back into the new stepper motor.

  7. Calibration

    Turn the tractor's key to the ON position. You must calibrate the new E-SCV stepper motor using the John Deere Service ADVISOR tool or through the CommandCenter display's hydraulic setup menu so the SCC module can learn the new motor's end-stops and neutral positions. Clear the stored 523893.04 fault code.
