John Deere 523905.17 – PTF: Front PTO Solenoid Valve, Open Circuit
Issue description
The control software detects an open circuit to the front Power Take-Off (PTO) solenoid valve. This typically means that the current in the ground lead or positive lead of the front PTO solenoid valve is too low or completely disconnected, preventing the solenoid from engaging the PTO.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and all relevant connectors related to the front PTO solenoid valve circuit for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
Verify that the ground connections for the front chassis control unit and the solenoid are secure and free of corrosion
Inspect the solenoid valve circuit to ensure proper voltage levels are reaching the positive lead when the PTO switch is activated
Check the front PTO switch in the cab for correct operation to ensure it is providing plausible values to the module
Ensure the OIC (Operator Interface Control) and PTF control software are up to date
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the front PTO solenoid valve assembly on the front chassis/transmission block.
Disconnect Electricals
Carefully unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the PTO solenoid valve.
Remove the Faulty Valve
Unbolt and remove the old solenoid valve assembly. Be prepared with a catch pan, as a small amount of hydraulic fluid may leak.
Clean and Prep
Clean the mounting surface thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Install the New Valve
Install the replacement PTO solenoid valve, ensuring that all O-rings and seals are properly seated. Bolt it securely into place.
Reconnect and Test
Reconnect the electrical harness. Start the tractor and test the front PTO engagement several times to confirm the fault code is cleared and the PTO operates smoothly.
