John Deere 523907.02 – CCU / CAB: Rear PTO Remote Switch Problem

Issue description

The control unit has detected a conflicting signal from the rear power take-off (PTO) remote switch, specifically simultaneous high or low voltage inputs from the 'ON' and 'OFF' circuits. This conflict prevents the controller from determining the switch's true position, which disables or affects the operation of the PTO system.

Check the cause

  1. Restart the tractor to see if the fault clears by resetting communication messages

  2. Check for other CAN bus communication errors, as they can trigger related fault codes

  3. Visually inspect the rear PTO remote switch (typically on the rear fender), its connector, and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, or loose connections

  4. Test the switch functionality using a multimeter to check for continuity changes between the 'ON' and 'OFF' positions

  5. Check for 12V power at the input terminal of the switch and inspect wiring for breaks, shorts, or corrosion

  6. Inspect and test the PTO circuit relay (often located under the seat or near an electrical panel), if equipped

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect power

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery's negative terminal for safety.

  2. Access the switch

Locate the faulty rear PTO remote switch on the fender. Remove any necessary covers to access the switch and its connector.

  3. Remove the old switch

Disconnect the wiring harness from the switch. Pinch the retaining clips to release the switch from its mounting.

  4. Install the new switch

Insert the new switch into the mounting position until it clicks into place.

  5. Reconnect wiring

Clean the connector terminals with an electronics cleaner, then connect the wiring harness to the new switch.

  6. Reassemble and test

Reinstall any removed covers, reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and test the operation of the rear PTO remote switch to ensure the fault is resolved.
