John Deere 523908.09 – RPT: Incorrect CAN BUS message, Information from OIC control software

Issue description

There is a data communication failure or an invalid signal being transmitted over the CAN bus network between the cab's main operator interface (OIC) and the rear chassis controller (RPT).

Applies to these machines

  • 6110M
  • 6120M
  • 6130M
  • 6145M
  • 6155M
  • 6175M
  • 6195M
  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R
  • 6090MC
  • 6090RC
  • 6100MC
  • 6100RC
  • 6110MC
  • 6110RC

Check the cause

  1. Check the CommandCenter/display for other active codes in the OIC or RPT modules (e.g., OIC 000168.04 loss of unswitched supply voltage)

  2. Verify that the remote control switch for the rear PTO is not physically damaged or shorting out

  3. Visually inspect the CAN bus wiring harness running from the cab (OIC module) to the rear chassis (RPT module) for chafing, pinch points, or rodent damage

  4. Disconnect the harnesses at both the OIC and RPT modules and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or pushed-back pins

  5. Use a multimeter to verify the CAN bus terminating resistors (typically 60 ohms across CAN High and CAN Low with batteries disconnected) and check for proper CAN voltages (approx. 2.5V) when powered

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the key switch and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Clean and Reseat Connectors

If moisture or light corrosion was found during the diagnostic checks, clean the OIC and RPT connector pins with electronic contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease. Reseat the connectors firmly.

  3. Repair Wiring

If the CAN bus harness is damaged between the cab and the rear chassis, splice and heat-shrink the damaged CAN High/CAN Low wires, or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Clear Codes and Retest

Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and clear the stored codes via the CommandCenter or John Deere Service Advisor. Cycle the key switch.

  5. Software Update / Module Replacement

If the wiring is perfectly intact and the code returns immediately, the OIC or RPT module may have an internal failure or require a software re-flash. A John Deere dealer will need to connect Service Advisor to determine which module is failing to broadcast/receive and flash or replace the faulty unit.
