John Deere 523949.06 – SFA (Suspended Front Axle Control Unit): Front Axle Flow Control Solenoid Circuit Problem / SFA Up Solenoid High Amps
Issue description
The control software has detected that the electrical current (amperage) in the circuit for the solenoid valve responsible for raising the front axle suspension is too high. This typically points to a short to ground, a short to battery voltage on the high or low side of the drive circuit, or an internally shorted solenoid coil.

Check the cause
Restart the engine to verify if the active Diagnostic Trouble Code reappears, as resetting communication messages may clear it
Visually inspect around the batteries and alternator for any signs of damage or accumulated debris that could affect system voltage
Remove debris and thoroughly clean the Independent Link Suspension (ILS) or front axle suspension manifold to ensure debris isn't interfering with connections
Examine the wiring harness and connections leading to the SFA Up solenoid for any signs of a short to ground, damaged insulation, or exposed wires
Use a multimeter to measure the current and resistance (ohms) in the solenoid valve circuit to determine if the solenoid coil is internally shorted
Repair steps
Power Down & Check Fuses
Turn off the tractor and check the relevant suspension fuses (e.g., Fuse F30) to ensure a short hasn't blown the circuit protection.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the SFA Up (Raise) solenoid valve on the front axle suspension control block/manifold.
Inspect the Harness
Disconnect the wiring harness from the solenoid. Inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or melting caused by high current.
Test the Solenoid
Perform an ohms test across the solenoid pins. If the resistance is below the acceptable OEM specification (indicating an internal short causing the high amp draw), the solenoid is defective.
Repair Wiring
If the solenoid tests good, trace the wiring harness back to the SFA control unit and repair any shorts to ground.
Replace the Solenoid
If the solenoid is faulty, remove it from the valve body and install a new OEM replacement.
Calibrate the System
After replacing suspension components or sensors, use the John Deere service tool/display to perform an SFA system calibration, as the suspension may not respond properly until recalibrated.
