John Deere 523971.03 – AIC / ACU / HCU: The Signal Voltage From The Rear Hitch Height Control Slide is too high

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the rear hitch control lever (or depth-setting slide potentiometer) that exceeds the normal operating range. This condition typically points to an open ground circuit, a short to power in the wiring harness, or an internally failed potentiometer/sensor inside the armrest console.

   Power cycle the tractor to see if the system recovers and the code clears

   Inspect the rear hitch control slide/lever on the armrest console for physical damage, sticking, or debris preventing smooth movement

   Access the wiring beneath the armrest control console and inspect the connector going to the depth-setting potentiometer for corrosion, backed-out pins, or damaged wires

   Use a multimeter to test the sensor circuit for a short to power (which causes the voltage too high condition) or an open ground wire on the potentiometer circuit

   Test the resistance/voltage sweep of the potentiometer while moving the slide to see if the voltage spikes out of range or reads open

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts while working on the control modules.

   Access the Armrest Console

   Carefully remove the trim panels or cover on the AIC/ACU armrest console to expose the rear hitch control slide assembly.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken ground wire or a short to power in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wiring and secure it with heat-shrink tubing.

   Replace the Sensor/Potentiometer

   If the wiring is intact but the sensor failed the sweep test, disconnect the harness from the rear hitch control potentiometer. Remove the mounting screws securing the potentiometer/slide assembly and install the new OEM replacement part.

   Reassemble and Reconnect

   Reinstall the armrest covers and reconnect the tractor's battery.

   Recalibrate

   Turn the key on. In many cases, replacing a hitch potentiometer requires a hitch calibration procedure via the tractor's CommandCenter display or John Deere Service ADVISOR tool so the AIC/HCU learns the new minimum and maximum voltage values of the slide.
