John Deere 523971.13 – Main Control Module (AIC): The Depth control slide position sensor is not calibrated
Issue description
This code indicates that the system has lost the calibration values for the depth-setting potentiometer (often designated as component B27 in John Deere schematics), or the sensor is reading outside of its expected calibrated range. This sensor is used by the operator to set the working depth of the rear 3-point hitch.

Check the cause
Check for related AIC or BCU codes (e.g., voltage too high/low codes like 523834.03 or 523834.04) which would indicate a hard electrical failure rather than just a calibration issue.
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the AIC and the depth-setting potentiometer (B27) for pinched wires, corrosion, or loose pins.
Perform a voltage sweep test: Monitor the voltage of the depth control potentiometer while slowly moving the slider from minimum to maximum. The voltage should scale smoothly between 0.5V and 4.5V. If it drops to 0, spikes to 5V, or jumps erratically, the potentiometer has an internal dead spot and must be replaced.
Repair steps
Determine repair path and power down
If the potentiometer is physically faulty, it must be replaced. If it is electrically sound, skip to the calibration steps. To replace, power down the tractor and disconnect the battery ground.
Access the potentiometer
Remove the control console cover on the right-hand armrest/console that houses the position feedback unit. Pull off the external control knobs from the sliders/rotary dials.
Remove the faulty potentiometer
Remove the retaining hex nuts. Using a small screwdriver, carefully press out the depth-setting potentiometer (B27) from its mounting bracket. Disconnect the harness, unscrew the hex socket screw, and remove the unit.
Install the new potentiometer
Install the new potentiometer, reconnect the harness, and reassemble the console.
Prepare for calibration
A hitch calibration must be performed using the tractor's CommandARM display or John Deere Service ADVISOR. Set the physical Depth Control slider/knob to '0' (fully raised position command) while the actual rear hitch is fully lowered to the ground before initiating the calibration sequence.
Perform hitch calibration
Follow the on-screen prompts to sweep the controls and teach the AIC the new minimum and maximum voltage values for the sensor.
Parts you might need
(1)Depth-Setting Potentiometer (Component B27) / Hitch Position Slide Sensor
Exact part number varies depending on whether the tractor is equipped with a standard right-hand console or a CommandARM. Look up in the John Deere Parts Catalog using the tractor's exact PIN/Serial Number under 'Armrest Controls' or 'Hitch Control Console'.
