John Deere 524038.09 – SCC (Selective Control Controller) or SCU (Deluxe Hydraulic Control Unit): Missing SCV IV External Control Message for 1 Second
Issue description
This is a CAN BUS communication fault indicating that the control module has stopped receiving the external control data/command message for Selective Control Valve (SCV) #4 for a duration of more than one second.

Check the cause
Restart the Tractor: Turn off the engine and restart the vehicle. Sometimes the code is triggered by a temporary CAN BUS glitch and can be corrected simply by resetting the communication messages during a restart.
Cycle the Controls: Cycle the SCV IV Control Lever (or paddle) through all of its positions (Extend, Retract, Float, Neutral).
Check Implement Connections: Because the fault specifies an "External Control Message" is missing, check any connected implement documentation. If you are using an implement that automates or externally commands SCV IV via an ISO connection, ensure the implement harness is securely connected to the tractor.
Repair steps
Acknowledge the Code
Clear the code on the CommandCenter display to see if it immediately returns to an active state.
Inspect the Wiring Harness
Inspect the chassis wiring harness connecting the Rear Chassis Controller (SCC/SCU) to the SCV IV valve block at the rear of the tractor, as well as the harness running to the SCV IV control lever/paddle potentiometer in the cab.
Check for Damage
Look for damaged wires, moisture intrusion in the connectors, or loose pins. The rear chassis harness is highly susceptible to field debris and moisture.
Test the Controller
If the wiring is intact, the issue may lie within the SCV IV controller itself (which can fail randomly) or the Rear Chassis Controller (SCC) failing to process the CAN messages. The OEM manual states that if the code returns after cycling the lever and restarting, you should have a dealer run a diagnostic software test to pinpoint whether the SCV slice or the SCC module has failed.
