John Deere 524055.02 – XMC: Control Software Internal Fault
Issue description
An error occurs while the system is attempting to read the internal memory module (EEPROM). This condition means the internal storage and retrieval of configuration data has been disrupted, which prevents the control software from functioning correctly and can lead to limited or disabled steering automation features.

Check the cause
Ensure the XMC module is properly connected and inspect the wiring harness for physical damage, corrosion, or loose pins that could cause data interruptions.
Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR (or a compatible diagnostic tool) to monitor the internal operations of the control software and verify the EEPROM reading errors.
Check if there are any available firmware or software updates for the XMC control software to address known bugs or compatibility issues related to the EEPROM.
Repair steps
Reprogram the Module
Using John Deere Service ADVISOR (or the John Deere Custom Performance program), attempt to reprogram the XMC / BCU using the most current software payload file.
Perform Calibrations
If the flash is successful, execute all required configurations and calibrations. For example, on 7R/8R tractors, you must recalibrate the steering sensor (ensuring the machine is on flat, smooth, and hard ground).
Clear Codes
Delete the diagnostic trouble codes, cycle the key switch/tractor power, and verify if the code returns.
Replace the Module
If the control unit fails to take the reprogramming (indicating permanent physical damage to the EEPROM), the XMC Steering System Control Unit must be replaced.
Parts you might need
(1)Steering System Control Unit (XMC) / AutoTrac™ Main Control Unit
Varies strictly by machine model and serial number. A blank replacement XMC module will require dealer-level programming and payload activation upon installation to pair with the tractor's CAN bus and AutoTrac system.
