524069.03

John Deere 524069.03 – PTR / VCU: Reverse Solenoid Short to High

Issue description

The controller detects that the voltage on the reverse clutch/drive valve solenoid circuit is higher than the expected operating range, typically caused by the solenoid's wiring harness shorting directly to a high-voltage source or an internal short within the solenoid itself.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110M
  • 6120M
  • 6130M
  • 6145M
  • 6155M
  • 6175M
  • 6195M
  • 4044M
  • 4044R
  • 4049M
  • 4049R
  • 4052M
  • 4052R
  • 4066M
  • 4066R
  • 7400A
  • 9009A
  • 2700
  • 2750
  • 7500A
  • 7700A
  • 8000A

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness from the reverse e-Hydro solenoid back to the PTR or VCU for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinched areas where the circuit might be shorting to a 12V power source.

  2. Disconnect the reverse solenoid and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage. Repeat this inspection at the main controller (PTR/VCU) harness.

  3. Use a digital multimeter to check the resistance across the reverse solenoid pins and compare the reading to the specifications in your machine's technical manual to rule out an internal short.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Valve Block

Locate the hydrostatic transmission drive valve block. Identify the reverse drive valve solenoid.

  3. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to high voltage in the harness, splice and repair the damaged wire, or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Replace the Solenoid

If the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the resistance test, remove the retaining nut/bolt holding the reverse solenoid coil to the valve stem and slide it off. Install the new solenoid coil and secure it.

  5. Reassemble and Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back into the solenoid and reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibrate the Hydro Valves

Calibrate the valves using John Deere Service ADVISOR software or a specific onboard dash sequence depending on the model.
