John Deere 524069.06 – PRC / PTQ: The Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amps Are High

The control unit has detected an abnormally high current draw or a short circuit on the signal circuit for the reverse clutch solenoid valve (Y36 or Y97).

   Inspect the wiring harness (W28) and the connector at the reverse solenoid valve (Y36/Y97) for signs of damage, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Test solenoid resistance by disconnecting the connector and measuring across the coil pins. Expected resistance is 8 to 11 Ohms; a significantly lower reading indicates an internal short.

   Check for shorts in the harness by disconnecting the transmission control unit (PRC/PTQ) connector. With ignition ON, measure voltage between the signal wire and ground (checking for short to positive), and check continuity to ground (checking for short to ground).

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes. Ensure the tractor cannot roll.

   Locate the Solenoid

   Locate the transmission control valve block (usually accessible from the side or top of the transmission housing, depending on the cab configuration). Identify the reverse solenoid valve (Y36/Y97).

   Remove the Defective Solenoid

   Disconnect the electrical plug. Clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the transmission hydraulic circuit. Unbolt and remove the solenoid valve from the manifold.

   Install the New Solenoid

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean John Deere HY-GARD™ transmission oil. Insert the solenoid into the valve block and torque the retaining bolts to OEM specifications.

   Reassembly and Testing

   Reconnect the electrical harness. Reconnect the battery. Clear the stored 524069.06 fault code using a diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard diagnostic display. Start the tractor and test the forward/reverse shuttle operation to ensure the code does not return and the tractor moves in reverse smoothly.
