524108.05

John Deere 524108.05 – PTA / TCU: Proportional Solenoid Valve 1 (Y1) for Hydrostatic Unit, Current Too Low

Issue description

The control software registers a current value (or resistance) at the proportional solenoid valve 1 that does not correspond with the commanded working position of the hydrostatic unit, typically indicating that the electrical circuit for the proportional solenoid valve 1 is open. This results in limited or no function of the transmission.

Check the cause

  1. Check for related diagnostic trouble code PTA 524107.05 (or TCU 524107.05), which indicates a general supply voltage (VPS1) problem rather than an isolated Y1 valve failure.

  2. Ensure the VPS1 circuit is providing a stable voltage to the solenoid valves.

  3. Thoroughly inspect all wiring harnesses and connectors associated with the Y1 solenoid valve for signs of chafing, damage, corrosion, or disconnection.

  4. Test the resistance across the Y1 solenoid valve pins to verify if the coil is internally open, which would cause the 'Current Too Low' reading.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the park brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate the Y1 Solenoid

Locate the Proportional Solenoid Valve 1 (Y1) on the transmission's hydrostatic control unit.

  3. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic inspection revealed broken wires or corroded pins in the connector, repair the wiring harness or replace the connector pigtail. Clear the codes and test operation.

  4. Replace the Solenoid Valve

If the wiring and supply voltage are intact but the solenoid coil is internally open, remove the retaining hardware for the Y1 solenoid valve and extract the valve from the hydrostatic unit block.

  5. Install New Valve

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean hydraulic/transmission fluid. Install the valve and torque to OEM specifications.

  6. Reconnect and Calibrate

Reconnect the electrical harness. Clear the PTA/TCU fault codes via the monitor or service tool. You may need to perform a transmission calibration procedure after replacing hydrostatic control components.

Ensure you are replacing the Y1 valve and not the Y2 valve, as they are located on the same hydrostatic unit block.
