John Deere 524157.09 – BRC or CCU: Right Brake Pedal Switch Fault Message Received

Issue description

Data from the right brake pedal position switch has been received via a CAN bus message with a failure indication. This often means there is a conflict between the voltage reading from the right brake pedal sensor and the physical state of the right brake pedal switch.

Check the cause

  1. Restart the engine to verify if the active diagnostic trouble code reappears, as it may be a temporary CAN bus glitch.

  2. Press the select switch on the CommandCenter to acknowledge the Service Alert and monitor the condition.

  3. Inspect the right brake pedal switch under the dash/cab floor to ensure it has not physically popped out of place or become misaligned.

  4. Check the right brake pedal switch and sensor circuit for voltage conflicts, ensuring the wiring harness to the BRC/CCU is free of shorts, corrosion, or open circuits.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Switch

Locate the right brake pedal switch assembly, typically mounted on the brake pedal linkage bracket inside the cab.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the right brake pedal switch.

  4. Remove the Faulty Switch

Unbolt or unclip the faulty switch from its mounting bracket.

  5. Install the New Switch

Mount the replacement brake pedal switch. Ensure the switch is securely fastened so it does not move or pop out of place during heavy pedal actuation.

  6. Reconnect and Test

Plug the electrical connector back in, reconnect the battery, and start the tractor. Actuate the right brake pedal several times to ensure the brake lights illuminate properly and the 524157.09 code does not return on the CommandCenter.

  7. Dealer Calibration (If Necessary)

If the code persists after replacing the switch, the tractor may require a software calibration of the brake pedal sensor via a John Deere dealer's Service ADVISOR tool.
