John Deere 524157.31 – CCU (Chassis Control Unit): Right Brake Pedal Signal Fault

The controller is receiving an erratic, out-of-range, or missing electrical signal from the right brake pedal position/travel sensor.

   Visually inspect the right brake pedal position sensor and its wiring harness for rubbed wires, pinched harnesses, or debris interfering with the pedal linkage.

   Disconnect the sensor and check the connector for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture.

   Perform a voltage/resistance sweep test: verify the 5V reference and ground from the CCU, then back-probe the signal wire while slowly depressing the pedal. The voltage should sweep smoothly; erratic jumps or drops to 0V indicate internal sensor failure.

   Check the mechanical linkage to ensure the right brake pedal returns fully to its resting position and is not binding.

   Power Down

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent short circuits.

   Locate the Sensor

   Access the brake pedal assembly in the cab. Locate the rotary travel sensor attached to the pivot point of the right brake pedal.

   Remove the Sensor

   Disconnect the electrical pigtail. Remove the retaining screws/bolts holding the sensor to the pedal bracket.

   Install the New Sensor

   Mount the new sensor, ensuring the internal rotary tang aligns correctly with the pedal pivot slot. Tighten the mounting hardware.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back in and reconnect the battery.

   Clear Codes & Calibrate

   Turn the key to the ON position. Clear the stored CCU 524157.31 fault code using a John Deere Service ADVISOR tool or the onboard diagnostic monitor.

   Test

   Depress the right brake pedal to verify the code does not return and that brake lights/trailer braking functions operate normally.
