John Deere 524162.19 – SFA: Left Brake Pedal Switch Fault Message Received
Issue description
The control unit is receiving a fault status message, an out-of-range voltage signal, or is missing the CAN BUS data entirely from the left brake pedal switch/potentiometer (B88 Sensor Unit).

Check the cause
Restart the engine to verify if the active DTC reappears, as it may be a transient communication glitch.
Inspect the left brake pedal potentiometer/switch (B88 sensor unit) for physical damage, debris, or misalignment.
Use a multimeter or diagnostic tool to confirm that the brake pedal switches are providing accurate voltage signals corresponding to pedal position.
Inspect all wiring harnesses, jumpers, and connectors between the brake pedal sensor unit and the SFA/BRC modules for chafing, damage, corrosion, or loose pins.
Repair steps
Safely Park the Machine
Place the tractor in park, shut off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Access the Pedal Assembly
Remove the lower dash or steering column trim panels as necessary to access the brake pedal assembly inside the cab.
Test the Harness
Disconnect the harness from the left brake pedal switch/potentiometer. Test the harness for continuity and ensure it is receiving proper reference voltage from the control module.
Replace the Sensor
If the wiring is intact but the sensor fails the voltage sweep test, unbolt and remove the faulty left brake pedal switch/potentiometer (B88). Install the new sensor.
Adjust the Pedal Sensor
Ensure the new brake pedal sensor is correctly adjusted according to manufacturer specifications so that it does not throw continuous high or low voltage readings at rest.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and clear the codes via the CommandCenter display (by pressing the select switch) or via a John Deere Service Advisor tool. Test drive to ensure the code does not return.
