John Deere 524162.31 – CCU: Left Brake Pedal Signal Fault
Issue description
The signal coming from the left brake pedal position sensor (travel sensor) is out of range, erratic, or missing, preventing the control unit from accurately determining the position of the left brake pedal.

Check the cause
Connect a diagnostic tool and monitor the CCU live data for the left brake pedal position. Slowly depress and release the pedal to check for smooth voltage/percentage transitions without dropouts or spikes.
Visually inspect the left brake pedal travel sensor on the pedal assembly inside the cab to ensure the mechanical linkage and sensor arm are not broken or disconnected.
Disconnect the sensor harness and inspect the connector for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture intrusion.
Turn the key to the ON position and measure the reference voltage (typically 5V) and ground at the sensor connector. If present, check for continuity on the signal wire between the sensor connector and the CCU.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.
Access the Sensor
Remove any lower dash or steering column trim panels necessary to fully access the brake pedal assembly.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty left brake pedal position sensor.
Remove
Remove the mounting screws or bolts securing the sensor to the pedal bracket. Carefully detach the sensor from the pedal linkage.
Install
Mount the new OEM brake pedal position sensor. Ensure the mechanical linkage or rotary arm is properly aligned with the pedal mechanism so it travels its full sweep without binding.
Secure
Tighten the mounting hardware to the manufacturer's specifications.
Reconnect
Plug in the electrical connector, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.
Reassemble & Test
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on, clear the CCU fault codes using your diagnostic tool, and depress the left brake pedal several times. Verify that the code does not return and that brake lights and transmission disconnect functions operate correctly.
