John Deere 524165.19 – CSC (Comfort System Controller) or TCU (Transmission Control Unit): Incorrect CAN Bus Message, Clutch / Desired Clutch Torque Limit Fault Message Received
Issue description
The control unit is unable to determine the clutch torque (or clutch pedal position) because the signal from the clutch potentiometer is incorrect or missing. Because the module cannot read this data, a replacement default value is transmitted instead, triggering the fault.

Check the cause
Diagnose any active PTI, PTP, or PTQ codes first, as they may be the underlying cause of the missing CAN BUS message
Inspect the wiring harness connected to the clutch potentiometer for any signs of chafing, damage, disconnection, or wear
Check for loose wires and ensure all wires connected to the clutch potentiometer are secure
Verify that all connectors are clean, secure, and free from dirt or corrosion
Use John Deere Service ADVISOR to test the clutch potentiometer's sweep and verify if it is functioning correctly or dropping signal
Repair steps
Resolve Wiring Issues
Repair or replace any faulty wiring or pins found during the visual inspection. Clean or replace connectors if corrosion is present.
Replace the Potentiometer
If the clutch potentiometer fails the diagnostic sweep test or is physically damaged, remove and replace it.
Update and Calibrate
Ensure the CSC/TCU control software is up-to-date. Crucially, you must perform a clutch calibration after replacing the potentiometer to ensure the control software accurately processes the new sensor's signals.
Perform Functional Tests
Clear the codes and conduct comprehensive operational tests (driving and shifting) to confirm that the clutch potentiometer signal is now being correctly transmitted and received on the CAN BUS.
Parts you might need
