Issue description

The control unit detects a mismatch between the output signals of the dual-channel clutch pedal potentiometer (Sensor B65). The voltage at Channel 1 (lead 6114) must be exactly double the voltage of Channel 2 (lead 6007). If the ratio is incorrect, the error is logged and clutch functionality may be disabled or limited.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Mechanical Linkage: Check the clutch pedal potentiometer (B65) for physical damage, misalignment, or a loose mounting bracket that could cause the sensor to read out of bounds.

  2. Verify Voltage Ratios: Using a multimeter or John Deere Service ADVISOR, measure the voltages at Channel 1 and Channel 2 of the sensor while slowly depressing the pedal. Confirm whether Channel 1 is failing to output exactly double the voltage of Channel 2.

  3. Inspect Wiring and Connections: Check the wiring harness leading to the clutch pedal sensor. Look for corrosion in the connector pins, loose connections, rubbed-through wire insulation, or short circuits (specifically on leads 6114 and 6007).

  4. Test Sensor Circuitry: Test the ground and 5V reference supply to the potentiometer to ensure the sensor is receiving proper power from the control unit.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Locate the clutch pedal potentiometer (B65) mounted on the clutch pedal pivot assembly inside the cab console.

  3. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

    If diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring or corroded pins, clean the connector with contact cleaner or splice/repair the damaged wires. Re-test the voltage ratio.

  4. Replace the Potentiometer

    If the wiring is intact but the sensor's internal tracks are worn (causing the voltage mismatch), disconnect the wiring harness from the sensor.

  5. Dismount and Install

    Remove the retaining hardware holding the sensor to the pedal linkage. Install the new potentiometer, ensuring the mechanical tang/arm aligns correctly with the pedal pivot slot.

  6. Reassemble and Calibrate

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position. Depending on the tractor model, you may need to perform a clutch pedal calibration routine via the CommandCenter or Service ADVISOR so the module learns the new sensor's minimum and maximum voltage sweeps.

  7. Test Operation

    Depress the clutch pedal multiple times to ensure the 524173.02 code does not return and the tractor engages/disengages gears smoothly.
