John Deere 524173.02 – PTR / CAB / EPC / PTP / PL3: Clutch Pedal Compare Error / Clutch Pedal Sensor Voltage Conflict

The clutch pedal position sensor (potentiometer B65) is a dual-channel sensor. The control unit continuously monitors both channels to ensure the sensor is reading accurately. For the system to function correctly, the voltage output at Channel 1 must be exactly double the voltage at Channel 2. If the control unit detects that this ratio is incorrect, or if there is a short/open circuit, it logs code 524173.02. When this occurs, the controller may disable clutch functionality to prevent unsafe operation or erratic shifting.

   Check the clutch pedal potentiometer (B65) for physical damage, misalignment, or loose mounting hardware.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the sensor. Look for corrosion in the connector pins, chafed wires, or loose connections that could cause a voltage drop or short circuit.

   Using a multimeter or diagnostic tool, measure the voltages at Channel 1 and Channel 2 of the sensor while slowly depressing the clutch pedal. Verify that the voltage at Channel 1 is consistently double the voltage at Channel 2 throughout the pedal's travel. If the ratio is off, the sensor has failed internally.

   Disconnect power

   Disconnect the negative (—) battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

   Access the sensor

   Remove the center control console cover or the lower dash access panel to expose the clutch pedal linkage.

   Disconnect wiring

   Unplug the wire connector from the clutch pedal position sensor.

   Remove linkage

   Remove the ball stud or linkage arm connecting the sensor to the clutch pedal.

   Remove sensor

   Remove the two mounting screws holding the clutch pedal position sensor in place and remove the faulty unit.

   Install new sensor

   Mount the new sensor using the retaining screws. Reattach the ball stud/linkage to the pedal.

   Reconnect wiring and panels

   Plug the wiring harness back into the sensor and reinstall the console cover.

   Calibrate sensor

   Reconnect the battery and clear the stored 524173.02 fault code. Depending on the transmission, perform a clutch pedal calibration routine via the tractor's command center or diagnostic tool so the controller learns the new sensor's minimum and maximum voltage limits.
