John Deere 524173.03 – OIC, CAB, TCU, EPC, or PTQ: Clutch Pedal Sensor Circuit Voltage High

Issue description

The control unit measures a voltage of more than 4.7 to 4.8 volts at the signal input from Channel 1 of the clutch pedal potentiometer. This almost always indicates a loss of ground to the sensor, a short to power in the signal wire, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

Check the cause

  1. Locate the clutch pedal potentiometer on the clutch pedal linkage and check for obvious physical damage, packed dirt, or moisture intrusion.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, bent terminals, or loose wire crimps.

  3. Turn the key ON (engine off) and measure the 5V reference wire at the connector to ensure it reads a steady 5.0V.

  4. Measure the ground wire for continuity to the chassis/module ground (a high-resistance or open ground is the most common cause).

  5. Ensure the signal wire is not shorted to a 12V power source.

  6. If the wiring harness, 5V reference, and ground are all perfectly intact, conclude the potentiometer has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground if you will be repairing harness wires.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Remove any lower dash or floor console trim panels required to access the clutch pedal pivot linkage.

  3. Remove the Old Sensor

    Unplug the electrical connector. Remove the mounting screws/bolts holding the rotary sensor to the pedal bracket. Slide the sensor off the linkage shaft.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Slide the new potentiometer onto the linkage, ensuring the rotary tang/slot aligns perfectly with the pedal shaft. Do not force it, as the internal plastic sweeps are fragile.

  5. Secure and Reconnect

    Tighten the mounting hardware and plug the electrical connector back in.

  6. Calibrate the New Sensor

    Turn the key ON and clear the inactive fault codes. You must perform a clutch pedal calibration procedure (often done via the tractor's CommandCenter display or by a dealer using Service ADVISOR) so the control module can learn the new minimum and maximum voltage endpoints of the replacement sensor.
