John Deere 524173.04 – OIC / CAB / PTQ / TCU / EPC: Clutch Pedal Potentiometer, Channel 1, Voltage Too Low

Issue description

The control unit measures a voltage of less than 0.2 or 0.3 volts at the signal input from channel 1 of the clutch pedal potentiometer. This indicates a problem with the signal lead, a faulty ground connection, or a loss of supply voltage to the potentiometer, which may cause the transmission to shift into neutral or enter limp mode.

Check the cause

  2. Test the Potentiometer: Use a multimeter to measure the voltage at channel 1 of the potentiometer. Verify if the signal voltage is actually dropping below the 0.2V–0.3V threshold during pedal travel.

  3. Verify Circuit Integrity: Check the 5V reference (supply voltage) and the ground circuit to the sensor. If the supply voltage is missing, trace the wiring back to the control module to find the short or break.

  4. Unplug Test: Unplug the clutch pedal potentiometer to isolate the issue. If unplugging it changes the active codes (or drops out secondary codes), the sensor itself is likely internally shorted or defective.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare machine

    Turn off the tractor and ensure the parking brake is engaged.

  2. Locate sensor

    Access the clutch pedal assembly inside the cab and locate the clutch pedal potentiometer/sensor.

  3. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor.

  4. Remove hardware

    Remove the mounting hardware holding the potentiometer to the pedal linkage.

  5. Install new sensor

    Install the new clutch pedal potentiometer, ensuring the rotary mechanism aligns correctly with the pedal shaft/linkage.

  6. Secure and reconnect

    Secure the mounting hardware and reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Clear fault code

    Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic tool (or the tractor's onboard display) to clear the stored 524173.04 fault code.

  8. Test operation

    Test the clutch pedal operation. Ensure the transmission engages properly and that the voltage remains within the specified range without the code returning.

  9. Verify software

    Verify that the tractor's control software is up-to-date, as firmware updates can sometimes improve the handling of potentiometer signals.
